Okay so my first DIY gift suggestion is so easy, so cheap (um, could be free if you want it to be) and soooo meaningful. In fact, it was inspired by Oprah, the queen of sappy, er, I mean meaningful. This would be AMAZING for your Mom, or mom-like person, but also works well for Dads, friends, special aunts, that sort of thing.
Here is what you need: some pretty paper. And maybe a box that you decorate with more pretty paper. You could certainly buy a small box at the craft store or some engraved box, but you don't have to. And then you simply write a letter or a series of small notes.
What will they say?
Start with one of these prompts...
* My wish for you is...
* What I love about you is...
* Thank you for...
Now just imagine that you write your Mom a bunch of little pretty paper slips that start with those words and then go on to say personal stuff that you thought up. And you put them in a pretty box and gave it to her. Do you think she will cry tears of joy? Do you think she will like that better than a sweater? And did it cost you a thing? Yes, yes and no. Not only that, but this gift really gets to the heart of what Christmas, or Hanukah or Kwanza are all about.
Like I said, it also works for friends... they will cherish it forever.
Yeah, and hopefully my friends aren't reading this because they are all getting some special words just for them this year.
