THE GREATEST GUITAR STRAPS
Got a big sister who strums the night away? A friend who is a burgeoning rock star? Or maybe your Dad or Uncle can’t give up his dreams of music stardom. This is the gift for them.
Now, it’s true, you could make your own guitar strap from scratch—I’ve even seen a knitting pattern for one. But to make sure that it’s sturdy enough to hold up even the heaviest electric guitar, I like to start with the cheapest, plainest guitar strap I can find, something so unassuming it’s downright boring. And then I attack it with crafty zest to make it the perfect accoutrement for MY specific rock star pal.
What You Need:
* A plain, cheap guitar strap (go to one of those super-sized music shops).
* A needle and thread.
* Ribbons and / or Rick Rack (that’s the squiggly ribbon).
* Any number of small decorations such as buttons, fake flowers, lace, sequins, beads, patches faux-pearls, feathers, pom poms and more.
* Fabric glue.
The How-To:
Think out your design before you start gluing or sewing, and really think about the givee of such a cool gift. Do they like things flashy? If so, you just must incorporate sequins! If they’re crafty themselves, consider using the buttons, perhaps making them look like flowers with ribbon petals. Maybe your friend has a flowy, earthy style. If so, think about this: sew ribbons along the length of the strap, but only stitch them about half way down. Then the ribbons can wave in the breeze (or the wind machine!). If the recipient is very glamorous, use silk ribbon and beads and faux-pearls. You can sew ribbons and lace and patches and sequins on. You can glue the faux pearls, pom poms, and feathers on. The point is to make it one-of-a-kind and totally spot on.
And if you wanna start from scratch and make your very own guitar strap from fabric, I fond some instructions for YOU!
